Battle of the Books

What is Battle of the Books?

Battle of the Books is a competition between middle schools in St. Johns County. Teams read the novels on the SSYRA Novel List (see full list below), then identify quotes from the book in a head-to-head, competition-style format. The team that correctly identifies the most quotes is the winner!

Who should join?

Battle of the Books is open to any full-time, 6th-8th grade, SJVS student.

When do we meet?

Team meetings will occur monthly via Blackboard. As the actual Battle nears, we will meet face-to-face to practice.
Fall Monthly Meeting Dates
Friday, August 31st, 12:30PM
Friday, September 28th, 12:30PM
Friday, October 26th, 12:30PM
Friday, November 16th, 12:30PM

What do team members do?

SJVS Battle of the Books team members will read 3-5 novels from the 2018-2019 SSYRA Novel List (see full list below). They will be responsible for writing down 10 quotes from the novel, that the team can later use to practice. Additionally, during the monthly meetings, team members will discuss and share about the novels they read.

How do I join?

If you’re interested in being a Battle of the Books member for the first-ever SJVS team, email Mrs. Livingood and let her know or join one of our online meetings!
