My name is LaurieAnn (Laurie) Lawson and I am extremely excited to be your Computer Science Discoveries (CSD) teacher for 6th grade! I know that all 6th graders are required to take CSD, so you didn’t get to choose it, but I know that you will have a great time in this class and learn more about computers, and what cool 😎 things you can do with them, then you thought you could!
So…. who am I?
I was born and spent most of my life in Pennsylvania, about 40 minutes north of Philadelphia! After I finished my formal education and got married I moved around quite a bit! In addition to Pennsylvania I have lived in North Carolina, New York, and now Florida! I went to the University of Pittsburgh where I received two bachelors degrees; Economics & Communications and I received my Master of Business Administration degree from Suffolk University in Boston, MA.
You might be thinking…🤔 none of those are teaching degrees… and you would be correct! I spent the first 10 years of my career in the financial industry and then decided to go back to school and earn my teaching certificate in Business Education at Gwynedd-Mercy University. I taught computer science in a high school just outside of Philadelphia for 2 and 1/2 years before moving to New York. In New York I went back to my business roots and ran a not-for-profit business; the Condors Swim Club. All three of my children are/were competitive swimmers so I decided to do that job so that I could spend more time with them. Once I arrived in Florida in the late summer of 2018 I decided that it would be the perfect opportunity to get back to what I really love…. teaching! I spent a year at St. Augustine High School as the Permanent Building Substitute and this will be my 2nd year at FCA as a computer science teacher!
I married my husband, John, in October 1993 and together we have three children; Taylor, Ryan, and Olivia. Taylor is an elementary school teacher in Georgia (a Clemson University graduate… Go Tigers!!), Ryan is a Division 1 swimmer studying Computer Science at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), and Olivia attends Nease High School where she works on the yearbook and swims on the varsity team.Â
I did not play any sports in high school, but I was a horse-back rider for most of my life. I competed year-round in my chosen sport and also founded the Equestrian Team while I was at the University of Pittsburgh!
My favorite things to do are to go to the beach, read, and travel!
I look forward to a wonderful year with you!
