Please check your child\u2019s red folder\u00a0every<\/b>\u00a0day.\u00a0 He\/she will be expected to read a\u00a0\u00a0minimum<\/b>\u00a0of 20 minutes per night.\u00a0 There will\u00a0 be additional math homework assignments, but\u00a0THE MOST IMPORTANT<\/b>\u00a0habit your child can develop for academic success is to set aside a consistent time for independent reading\u00a0every<\/strong>\u00a0day<\/strong>.\u00a0 They should have a book on their level from our Media Center at all times.\u00a0 Once they have finished reading it, they will be expected to take the AR quiz before checking out another book.\u00a0 If your child is absent, please call the school or email me, so\u00a0I can prepare their make-up assignments.<\/div>\n
When he\/she asks, \u201cWhy can\u2019t I skip my 20 minutes of reading tonight?\u201d, please consider the following \u2013<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Student A reads 20 minutes, five nights of every week;<\/div>\n
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night\u2026or not at all!<\/div>\n
Step 1:\u00a0 Multiply minutes a night X 5 times each week.<\/div>\n
Student A reads 20 min. X 5 times a week = 100 minutes minutes a week;<\/div>\n
Student B reads 4 min. X 5 times a week = 20 minutes.<\/div>\n
Step 2:\u00a0 Multiply minutes a week X 4 times each month.<\/div>\n
Student A reads 400 minutes a month;<\/div>\n
Student B reads 80 minutes a month.<\/div>\n
Step 3:\u00a0 Multiply minutes a month X 9 months.<\/div>\n
Student A reads 3,600 minutes in a school year;<\/div>\n
Student B reads 720 min. in a school year.<\/div>\n
Student A practices reading the equivalent of 10 whole school days a year.<\/div>\n
Student B gets the equivalent of only 2 school days of reading practice.<\/div>\n
By the end of 6th grade if Student A and Student B maintain these same reading habits, Student A will have read the equivalent of 60 whole school days, while Student B will have read the equivalent of only 12 school days.\u00a0 One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance.\u00a0 How do you think Student B will feel about him\/herself as a student?<\/div>\n
