What LEARNING and GROWING went on in room 217 this week:

Academics

ELA:  Our class novel this week was Snot Stew by Bill Wallace.  This story is about two kittens, Toby and Kikki, that are adopted by a human family.  But misunderstandings of human ways and a limited grasp of language lands them in near-catastrophic situations..     We also practiced and sorted words with inflectional endings -ed and -ing as well as covering root/base words.  Finally, we continued read realistic fictional stories and described how characters reacted to and solved problems.

Writing:  We read I won’t ever eat a tomato  by Lauren Child and wrote about things we liked and disliked.  We really focused on descriptive language and editing our first piece to make it BETTER.

Math:  Chapter 4 is giving us LOTS of strategies to solve double-digit addition.  These mathematicians are really enjoying discovering which way works best for their brain.

What LEARNING and GROWING went on in room 217 this week:

Academics

ELA:  Our class novel this week was Stink and the Midnight Zombie by Megan McDonald.  This is another funny book based off the Judy Moody series.  Judy’s brother Stink and his best friend are on a mission to purchase the latest book from their favorite Zombie series.   We also sorted words with the /oo/ and /ew/ sounds.  Finally, we continued reading Aesops fables while searching for the CENTRAL IDEA or moral of the story.

Writing:  We practiced adding temporal words (first, next, then, last, finally, etc.) to stories to help make them more organized.

Math:  We wrapped up Chapter 3 – Basic Facts and relationships and took our final math test for 1st quarter math grades.

• Field trip on 10/17 to Rype and Readi:  Have students wear RB Hunt shirt (if available) and tennis shoes.  PLEASE APPLY BUG SPRAY AT HOME OR SIGN A WAIVER WITH THE SCHOOL NURSE TO HAVE IT APPLIED AT SCHOOL.  The mosquitoes were everywhere last year and I am predicting a similar scenario this year.  Also, if you are bringing a lunch from home, please send it in a gallon-sized ziploc bag with your child’s name clearly labeled.  This helps me fit everyone’s lunch in the cooler with ice.  🙂

What a busy and FUN week!FUN RUN WAS A BLAST!  We ran over 700 laps as a class!  Talk about endurance!Dem Bones, Dem Bones, DEM DRY BONES!  Studying and re-creating the HUMAN skeleton!

What LEARNING and GROWING went on in room 217 this week:

Academics

ELA:  Our class novel this week was It’s Halloween, I’m Turning Green by Dan Gutman.  This hysterical Halloween novel had students laughing out loud and reminded us the importance of not eating TOO much candy October 31st.   We also reviewed spelling patterns of r-controlled words and sorted words with the vowels sounds -/ou/ and /oo/.  Lastly, we read and recounted fables and folktales from around the world.

Writing:  We read Harry and the Terrible Whatzit by Dick Gackenbach.  Students wrote SCARY narratives following the entire writing process while challenging themselves to add onomatopoeia throughout their spooky stories.

Math:  We are focusing on addition and addition strategies for fluency.  Multiple strategies and techniques were explored for these mathematicians.

What LEARNING and GROWING went on in room 217 this week:

Academics

ELA:  Our class novel this week was Magic Treehouse – Pirates Past Noon.  This was an adventurous story with many twists and turns.  We discussed the elements of this book that made it both a fictional and non-fictional novel.   We also went over spelling patterns of r-controlled words and reviewed homophones.  Lastly, questioning and answering techniques while reading were addressed.

Writing:  We read The Best Part of Me by Wendy Ewald.  Students wrote opinion pieces describing what they felt what the best part of them including the entire writing process – pre-write (opening . body . closing), edit, and final draft.

Math:  We are focusing on addition and addition strategies for fluency.  Multiple strategies and techniques were explored for these mathematicians.

What LEARNING and GROWING went on in room 217 this week:

Academics

ELA:  We wrapped up reading Horrible Harry and Triple Revenge by Suzy Kline.  This is chapter book gave us the opportunity to discuss some social/emotional issues that may arise in school and the right and wrong way to handle them.  Our reading block also focused on sorting and recognizing long e words as well as sequential words – first, then, last.

Writing:  Students wrote about their experiences with Hurricane Irma as well as narratives using silly sentences.

Math:  We officially wrapped up Numbers to 1,000 and took the Chapter 2 Math Test on Friday.  We also enjoyed a few small group game centers such as “I have, who has”, “Race to the top”, and “Beat the Teacher”.

Science: We studied discussed the importance of the Scientific Method.

Social Studies:  We practiced labeling the continents and oceans on a map.

I hope you all are safe and recovering from Irma.  Please contact me if you need support in ANY way or a “heads up” of any special circumstances regarding your child.  School will be a welcome distraction from the chaos our beautiful state has endured the past week.  We are St. Augustine STRONG and we WILL RECOVER!

I apologize for the late update – I have been out of power, cable, and internet for more days than I ever expected.   A few quick updates:

• Our school counselor, Patricia McElhone will be sending home a flyer with important contact information.  Please be on the look-out for this in your child’s red folder. 
• School will resume Monday, September 18th. 
• NO OPEN HOUSE, MONDAY,  SEPTEMBER 18th.  Open House is rescheduled for another day in early October.  I will keep you posted when I hear more. 
• INTERIMS will go home sometime next week.  Again, I will keep you posted on an exact date.

What LEARNING and GROWING went on in room 217 this week:

Academics

ELA:  We began reading Horrible Harry and the Goog by Suzy Kline.  This is story about a mischievous boy and his escaped cat exploring Southside School and literally has us laughing out loud!  Our novel study is quickly becoming the most favorite part of our school day.  Our reading block also focused on sorting and recognizing long o words as well as describing connections between historical events.

Writing:  Students wrote “It happened to Me” narratives incorporating onomatopoeia.

Math:  Numbers to 1,000 were tackled the week – students were challenged with their number sense through word problems, higher order thinking questions, and independent work revolving around larger numbers.

Science: We discussed Earth Science and Earth’s Structures. Students recognized that the Earth is made of of rocks and that rocks come in many sizes and shapes.  They also described how small pieces of rock and dead plant and animal parts can be the basis of soil and explained the process by which soil is formed.

Social Studies:  Students studied the world in spatial terms as well as breaking down “Me on a Map”

What a MEMORABLE and EXCITING day Monday was watching the Solar Eclipse!

CONGRATULATIONS TO ELI, LILY S., EDDIE, AND AIDEN for earning their chains of success!  These students will be pictured next week.  🙂

What LEARNING and GROWING went on in room 217 this week:

Academics

ELA:  We finished reading Junie B. Jones Cheater Pants.  Students had the opportunity to take an A.R. test on this book as well as many other books this week!  Our reading block also  focused on main idea and finding key details in texts to help support our conclusions.

Writing:  This week students continued practicing narratives about our family, sketching, and sharing stories with our partners.

Math:  Students wrapped up Number Concepts and took Chapter 1 test.  Next week we will begin studying numbers to 1,000!

Science/Social Studies:   Eclipse, Maps.

What LEARNING and GROWING went on in room 217 this week:

Academics

ELA:  We began Junie B. Jones Cheater Pants as our 1st novel study.  Students had great conversations about the importance of honesty in school and how to redeem ourselves when we make mistakes… because we ALL make mistakes!   Our reading block also introduced “Read to Self” and “Work on Writing”.   These activities were completed independently.  We also focused on asking questions while we read and finding the answers in our text.  Students used highlighters to show text evidence while looking for key details.

Writing:  “Free-wheeling” sketches like author/illustrator Donald Crews were practiced this week while we wrote stories with partners and continued writing various narratives.

Math:  Students were stretched to the limit with their number sense this week.  We worked on Number Concepts.  Practice counting backward, by two’s, fives, ten’s, and recognizing number patterns on 100’s charts!

Science:   We read “Eddie’s Eclipse” and discussed the importance of safety during the upcoming eclipse.
