Welcome to Durbin Creek Elementary School! I’m Heather White, your child’s 4th grade teacher this year. I hope you are as eager as I am to begin this year of learning.
We have several curriculum changes this year as St. Johns County implements new Florida State standards across all grade levels. During this year your child will be keeping a journal, writing paragraphs, editing, and publishing stories. We’ll read fiction, non-fiction, science articles, how-to directions, fables, myths, journals, poetry, historical accounts, instructional writing and more. In addition, typing will be a critical skill for your child. We have some exciting math standards that stretch and strengthen your fourth grader’s understanding of math concepts.
We’ll practice multi-digit multiplication and division, missing digits, measurement, making data tables, reading graphs, number patterns, measuring angles, decimals, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, story problems, problem solving, and other critical skills.
Fourth grade is a wonderful time in your child’s growth. This year will prove to be both challenging and fascinating. Fourth grade requires a lot of dedication and practice. The reward is an incredible year of progress and pride. Trust that every teacher at Durbin Creek has the goal of helping your child be successful this year in school and in life.
So that we can be certain to communicate most effectively, please read and sign your child’s assignment book each night. This is a wonderful tool for school and home to share information. You’ll keep up to date on assignments, and we’ll write messages to one another.
If you have any questions, concerns, or information I should know, please feel free to contact me before or after school or send me an e-mail. The most effective way to contact me is to write a note in your child’s planner. I respond quickest to any notes written in the planner as it is something we will both see daily. I’ll respond to emails when I’m not working with students, and in a 24-48 hour window. I look forward to meeting and getting to know each family. Together we will all have a fabulous year.
