Vocabulary Information

Due to the FSA, this vocabulary quiz will be on Wednesday, May 1st.

therm = heat
geothermal – adj. of, relating to, or using the natural heat produced inside the Earth.  Engineers will consider the use of geothermal power.

hypothermia – n. a condition in which the temperature of the body is very low. The girl pulled from the icy water suffered from hypothermia.

thermal – adj. of, relating to, or caused by heat; designed to keep you warm by preventing heat from leaving your body. Wear thermal clothing when skiing, or you’ll be too cold to enjoy the sport.

thermos – n. a container that keeps liquids hot or cold for long periods of time. Mom packs my milk in a thermos so that it’s still cold by lunchtime.

thermostat – n. a device that automatically adjusts the temperature in a room to a desired level. Mr. Todd sets the thermostat in the classroom to 65 degrees, so it’s always freezing in his room.

hyper- super- = above
hypo- sub- = below

hyperactive – adj. extremely active or too active. I’m exhausted; this puppy is insanely hyperactive!

hypersensitive – adj. having feelings that are very easily hurt; very strongly and easily affected or harmed by something. Arnold is hypersensitive about discussing his abusive childhood.

superintendent – n. a person who directs or manages a place, department, or organization; a person who is in charge of cleaning, maintaining, and repairing a building. We waited to see if the superintendent would close schools because of the weather.

hypodermic – adj. going under the skin. Jacoby hardly felt it when the nurse stuck the hypodermic needle into his arm.

subconscious – adj. existing in the part of the mind that a person is not aware of; existing in the mind but not consciously known or felt. We are not always aware of what is going on in our subconscious mind.
