What do I do with my instrument during the summer?

What do I do with my musical instrument during the summer?

This question comes up in May every school year. Many people are unsure whether or not to return their instrument to the music store, or (in the case of school-owned instruments) turn it in for the summer.

If you are in the eighth grade and moving on to high school, and you have been using a school instrument, you will need to turn in your instrument to Pacetti Bay.

If you are in sixth or seventh grade and planning to continue in band for next school year, the answer is: Keep it for the summer. If you are on a rental plan with a music company, continue with your account as usual. If you’re using a school instrument, you’re good to keep it through the Summer break.  The form you signed for check out is good until September.

Instrumental musicians constantly work to improve their art by focusing on the high-level skills needed to perform a musical instrument. During the summer, even though students are not formally learning new concepts in the classroom, they can continue to develop and practice. At the very least, we don’t want to see students lose skills they’ve worked so hard to develop during the school year.

If you are moving out of our area, or not continuing in band for some other reason, you may not have any use for the instrument. If that’s the case, those of you on a rental plan from a music store should return the instrument to the store. Be sure to do this IN PERSON and leave the store with a receipt. Those of you using a school instrument can return the instrument to Mr. Sellers.
