Course list and placement information

All band classes have common requirements and expectations:

All band courses are part of the student’s regular daily class schedule and are year-long courses. Schedule changes from band to another elective during the academic year are not possible.

Public and in-class performances are a natural outgrowth of the study of music in this setting. All students will be required to perform informally (during class, for their peers and teacher) and formally (for the public).  We all get nervous when we perform.  This is normal, and the requirement to perform will help students manage being nervous during performances.

Students will be assigned homework. Homework assignments will almost always require practicing their instrument.

The “Fair-share” monetary commitment for the coming year will be $100 per student and is due at the beginning of the school year. The budget for the coming school year is $34,861. PBMS opened in 2006 with only a few school-owned instruments, a non-existent music library and inadequate storage. Our band enrollment is projected to be 257 and our population is growing. We must replace deteriorating equipment, expand our musical instrument inventory, provide more instrument lockers/shelving/storage, and enhance our music library. The fair share payments along with other fundraising efforts will allow us to meet the lofty goals of a facility, equipment and materials that meet the standard of an exemplary band program that meets the needs of students.

Parents are responsible for providing a quality musical instrument with needed supplies/materials. At this time, the only musical instrument available to rent from PBMS are the larger, more expensive instruments such as tuba, euphonium and f horn. There are local band instrument retailers that specialize in instruments for rent or purchase that make the band experience affordable for most families.

The following advanced band courses are offered:

Concert Band (M/J Band 2 and 3) for students who have completed at least one year of study either in beginning band at PBMS or another school, or equivalent/similar experience. This class will focus on individual instrument techniques and offer specialized instruction for students who have completed the basics of beginning band, but are not yet ready for middle-school level concert band literature. Students in this class will transition to concert band music by mid-year once they show readiness.

Course placement information:

All current PBMS band students who sign up for band for next school year will be placed in either Concert Band, Symphonic Band or Wind Ensemble based upon their performance during the current school year. A student’s performance on all assignments, assessments, exams, daily grades and attendance will be taken into consideration. Furthermore, the Wind Ensemble will be limited to only the top-performing players of each instrument in order to fulfil the instrumentation requirements of the high-quality, advanced literature performed.

All current PBMS band students who are interested in jazz cats will be auditioned during the last nine weeks of the school year.

Because of many factors that come into play when determining each student’s schedule, it is not likely students will know their band placement until after the current school year is over (either during summer break, or when the new school year begins).
