Week of August 27th Happenings

Hi Students! SJVS is working hard to offer students opportunities to get involved! Below is a list of the activities going on this week and some upcoming opportunities to get involved! Don’t forget to regularly check the SJVS Calendar of Events for the most up to date information.

This Week

Wednesday, August 29th, 9AM – 12PM
Academic Day – Come Work on Campus to get back on pace, work with other students, and get face-to-face help from teachers.

Friday, August 31st, 12:30PM – 1:00PM
Battle of the Books – Meet via Mrs. Livingood’s Blackbaord Classroom and discuss the SSYRA books and prepare for the Battle. Battle of the Books is a competition between middle and high schools in St. Johns County. Teams read the novels on the SSYRA Novel List, then identify quotes from the book in a head-to-head, competition-style format. The team that correctly identifies the most quotes is the winner! For more information visit the Battle of the Books page on Mrs. Livingood’s website.

Upcoming Events

Hispanic Heritage Essay Contest – This year’s theme is “A Celebration of Innovative Hispanic-American Leaders.” Florida history contains many examples of Hispanic-Americans who played an important role in shaping today’s Florida. Write about a Hispanic scientist, inventor, scholar or educator and their influence on Florida. All entries must be received no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 15, 2018.

History Day Competition – Choose a historical topic related to the annual theme, and then conduct primary and secondary research. You will look through libraries, archives and museums, conduct oral history interviews, and visit historic sites. After you have analyzed and interpreted your sources, and have drawn a conclusion about the significance of your topic, you will then be able to present your work in one of five ways: as a paper, an exhibit, a performance, a documentary, or a website. SJVS Competition will take place on February, 6, 2019. Please contact Mrs. McKenna at [email protected] for more information.

2018 Racial Justice Essay Contest – The Equal Justice Initiative is sponsoring a scholarship contest open exclusively to students in grades 9-12 in St. Johns County only.  This contest coincides with their upcoming dedication of a marker in St. Augustine that will memorialize Isaac Barrett, an African American man lynched in St. Johns County in 1897.  $5,000 in scholarships will be awarded to our own students and winners will be announced at the unveiling of the marker in St. Augustine on October 20, 2018. Students are asked to interact with a website and respond to a prompt of their choice (about racial justice) via a 700-800 word essay.  Entries must be submitted by October 1.  Please contact Mrs. Livingood for more information.

2018 High School Essay Contest Commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Ratification of the 14th Amendment – Students in grades 10-12 in St. Johns County and surrounding counties are invited to participate in this essay contest sponsored by the lawyers and judges of the U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida, and the Jacksonville Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.  In no more than 1,000 words, students must answer the question, “How does the phrase, “Equal protection of the laws,” impact you as a student?”  $3,500 in prizes will be awarded to students with the top three essays.  Entries must be submitted by October 15.  Please contact Mrs. Livingood for more information.
