Reading is My Jam…and it can be YOURS too!

I’ve often heard students say, “I’m not good at reading” or “I don’t like to read.” I hate to hear a student say either. Not only is reading one of my favorite past-times, but I think it opens doors to worlds we can’t imagine, friends we didn’t know existed, and to places we never would have explored. However, for students that think they aren’t good at reading or who don’t enjoy it, I realize this is definitely not the case!

So, how does one overcome these feelings of “not being good at reading” or “not liking it”? Easy…they READ! Just like with any skill, the more you practice the better you get! Reading, is no exception. Reading for 20 minutes or more every day, improves vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension!

However, students definitely don’t want to read if they don’t enjoy it.  I firmly believe that a student who thinks reading is boring, hasn’t found the right book!

This school year, I’m challenging my middle school Language Arts students to read frequently and to read widely. Students should read at least 20 minutes a day, and they should expand the types of texts they are reading (i.e. books, magazines, genres).

One way students can do this is by joining the first-ever SJVS Battle of the Books team! Battle of the Books participants will read books from a selected list, meet to discuss the books, then compete against other middle school students to find out who knows the books best! To find out more check out the Battle of the Books page!

Students – If you fall into the “Don’t like to read” or “I’m not good at reading” category, let me know. I want to help you find a book you will ENJOY reading and that you will be good at reading!
